Baxter Healthcare’s Prismaflex was the market leader in Continual Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) systems. In fact, Baxter had enjoyed being the market leader for over 20 years. Their next generation product, the PrisMax, had to meet or exceed those expectations. The PrisMax was to be their next flagship product in the CRRT space.
Brooks Stevens was selected out of a nationwide pool of product design and development firms. We were able to leverage extensive experience in medical device enclosure design and in the development of diagnostic medical systems.
Baxter and BSI approached the project with the goals to incorporate user research, to improve accuracy, to integrate cutting edge technology, and to increase efficiency.
To develop a best-in-class CRRT system that could live up to a 20-year history of market leadership, the product design and development team sought inspiration from users. The PrisMax was designed with input from more than 650 healthcare practitioners around the world.
The result? Baxter Healthcare’s PrisMax features innovations that make delivering therapy simpler and more efficient. The CRRT system incorporates the latest technology to increase accuracy and performance in delivering therapy for critically ill patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). An independent global study found that the PrisMax delivered significant improvements in performance, efficiency, and ease-of-use, including the time needed for bag changes, the number of informational and malfunction alarms, how often the blood pump stops, filter life, and machine downtime.
