Genesis Play Structure
Brooks Stevens, Inc. was challenged to create a commercial play ground system specifically designed to facilitate “growth through fun” in the three major areas of early childhood development — cognitive development, social skills and motor skills. Prior to our involvement, play structures for preschoolers were mainly smaller versions of standard commercial structures that gave little or no attention to the specific development needs of 2-5 year olds.
We created a totally new type of play environment in which early childhood development blossoms in a safe land of fantasy shapes, colors, and activity features. Soft contours and spacious play areas are placed at varied elevations and joined by smoothly rounded slides, stairways, climbers and connecting tunnels that encourage cooperative play and interaction. The unique design also allows children to play individually but still feel part of the group activity.
The majority of the Genesis structure consists of rotationally molded polyethylene with galvanized metal support posts for the umbrella canopies and activity platforms. All materials are 100% recyclable.
The Industrial Designers Society of America selected the Genesis play structure as a Bronze IDEA Award winner. The National Association of Educators of Young Children followed with an award of their own shortly after.
